Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust is a research institution on biomedical on tropical health problems. We do operate under Malawi College of Medicine (www.medcol.mw). We currently have about 150 users on our network that is always growing as more studies and programmes are being introduced. My job as an IT System Administrator is to manage ICT systems i.e. email and internet, network, medical system applications, IT security ,user training and heading the IT department. Our network connects to University of Malawi Colleges using fibre and radio network. We do connect to these colleges because we have a number of system applications that we host and are accessed by researchers, doctors and lecture across hence helping in the nations health system. I am responsible for the connectivity to the system applications that we host.

A brief description of your computing and networking environment (operating systems,
networking software, modems, etc.), including the connectivity of your organization
to the Internet and your country's connectivity to the international Internet*
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have a multi environment system. Some of our systems run on Windows 2003 and 2008 servers while some are running on Debian and Ubuntu LINUX servers. Our databases run on MS SQL 2008 and MySQL. We do connect to the internet through College of Medicine's fibre link that they subscribe to MTL (a local ISP). MTL connects to the internet using fibre that passes through Mozambique as well as another through Tanzania. We also have another link to the internet through Globe Internet (a local ISP) that connects to internet through VSAT. Globe is planning to switch to fibre as well. We connect to these local ISP using our cisco router and smothwall firewall box
